PROJECT DETAILS

Challenge

The project required the design and installation of a complete electrical supply for a new Knitwear Studio on Fair Isle. One of the main challenges was connecting the croft to the island’s main electricity supply: the site sits 300 metres from the nearest road and 550 metres from the grid transformer. This distance required careful planning, correct specification of cabling, and a robust installation approach.

In addition, the clients planned to build their future home on the site, making it essential that the new electrical infrastructure had sufficient capacity for long-term residential use. Combined with the complexities of working in a remote island environment, the project demanded meticulous coordination to ensure reliable delivery.

Solution

Nordri partnered with sister company CASE Shetland to provide the full electrical solution, from initial design to final installation.
This included:

Full design and specification of the electrical connection to the local island grid

→ Supply of cables, components, and all required electrical equipment

→ Attendance on Fair Isle to connect the underground cable to both the Bothy's distribution system and the grid

→ A second site visit to complete the 2nd-fix internal wiring and ensure the Bothy was fully operational

→ Designing the system with future-capacity in mind to support the clients’ planned home build

  • Despite the remote setting, Nordri coordinated with contractors and logistics partners to deliver the project safely and on schedule.

Results & Impact

Nordri delivered a fully operational electrical system for the new Knitwear Studio, providing a safe, reliable connection to the island grid and complete internal wiring. The project was completed on time through strong coordination across teams and contractors, ensuring seamless delivery despite the logistical challenges of working on Fair Isle. The client now has a functional, well-powered workspace that supports both production and workshop activities.
